Out of Office: Time Away From the Cubicle
First, it was an arid plot of land, used to test bombs in WWII.
Then, the Andrews family tried growing wheat there, with mixed results.
In 1953, the first well was drilled, and Mike Andrews started raising irrigated crops and a developed a whole new passion – raising Hereford cattle.
Then, a new idea; grapes. A vineyard. It started with a small portion of the farm; just 50 acres. Now it is an 1100 acre vineyard. Just like his passion for cattle, it just kept spreading. From the first acre was planted, Mike had a vision: his own winery. And on Mother’s Day, 2006, that dream came true.
Ten years later, some things have changed at the winery, with new vintages and a brand new tasting room. But many things remain the same: Mike’s passion for his grapes and cattle and the family tradition of making excellent wine.
Mike is rightfully proud of his wines, grapes, and land. In his view, the wines made from Coyote Canyon’s grapes can compete with the finest of the world. More than 25 international awards prove him right.
If you are lucky enough to find Mike in the tasting room, you can’t leave without asking about the history of the family. And do not forget to inquire about Big John. In the picture, Mike is the tall guy with a hat. Maybe you need another hint, he is wearing sunglasses.
Mike is a dynamo, quite often busy in the vineyard, answering calls from friends and clients, so it is a possibility that he will be away from the tasting room. So if he isn’t there, you might be fortunate enough to speak with Justin the winemaker. He will be more than happy to answer your questions and discuss the Coyote Canyon Wines. He can analyze any process and apply those skills and knowledge to transform them into a standardized, efficient, and lean process. Miguel has lived in Spain, Mexico, and Colorado, just to name a few places. He is fluent in both English and Spanish.
