Chinook Enterprises is a non-profit 501c3 designed to operate as a business, but with a social mission: supporting full participation in community life for people with disabilities or other barriers. Full participation must start with successful employment. We’ve provided services to individuals with disabilities and other barriers in Skagit County since 1980. In 2019 Chinook employed 90 individuals but during the COVID-19 epidemic, we shrunk down to 36 FTEs. Between 2021-2023, we’ve experienced nearly 85% turnover/growth in our CES department, which equates to 11 team members (the majority have worked for us less than 2 years) in direct support roles maintaining quality and consistent services to over 170 customers served annually, with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Creating a consistent onboarding and training program has been essential to our success. Chinook Enterprises employs approximately 60 individuals on staff across our three divisions, which are: Community Employment, Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance and Manufacturing, Production & Assembly. Inclusive employment practices exist across all departments, and we currently employ approximately 13 customers from DDA and many more who are referred to us from DVR. Our Manufacturing, Production & Assembly division has created aerospace parts since 1987, holds Premier bidder status with the Boeing Company and a silver rating for on-time delivery and quality. Our Supported Production (sheltered workshop program) closed in 2018 and we purposefully chose to let our 14c certificate expire, yet our commitment to a diverse workforce has not changed. Our Commercial Grounds & Landscape Maintenance division serves over 850 acres per week at large scale clientele including Skagit Valley College, Skagit Valley Hospital, Skagit Regional Airport, Port of Anacortes, Port of Skagit, PeaceHealth United General Hospital and more. On average during 2022, our 172 Community Employment customers worked 28,746 hours in integrated employment positions at 80 different local employers, earned an average wage of $15.69 per hour and stayed at their position approximately 8.15 years vs. the national average of 1.3 years. During 2022, our customers have earned $443,939 in wages and to date, we have served 6,014 people in community and employment settings.
